Hypothesis 1: DePaul students are likely to seek help from a YouTube video. The results shown from our survey disproves our first hypothesis. When we asked the question “If you have a ‘How To’ question, what method do you use to solve the issue?” out of 98 responses 64 of those said that they used Google search engine in order to receive help. Only 18 responded that they would peruse YouTube for help, although that was the second highest response. Our null hypothesis however was not fully supported since they are still likely to use YouTube to seek help.

Hypothesis 2: DePaul Students are likely to listen to music while surfing YouTube. The results of our survey supported our second hypothesis. When we asked participants “Why do you mainly access YouTube?” out of 100 responses we received 46 responses stating music as the main reason. The second highest was for comedic purposes.

Hypothesis 3: DePaul students are likely to subscribe to a YouTube channel after watching more than 1 video from that same channel. This hypothesis was supported from our survey. We found that students, if they have YouTube account, must watch more than one video in order to subscribe to that channel. It was surprising however that the responses showed participants would wait to subscribe to the channel only after watching six or more videos. We had thought it would be a lower number.

Along with our initial three hypotheses’ we found further results. We expected participants to be what we considered regular users; they watched 11-20 videos per week. However most considered themselves to be light users; they watch 1-10 videos per week. We also asked participants “What time of day do you mostly access YouTube?” we thought that students would use YouTube mainly in the evening hours and our results supported our conclusion. We felt that because they were students they would be in class during the day and wanting to go to bed earlier at night therefore they would use YouTube during the evening hours. We asked only two free form questions on this survey. “What is your major?” and “What How-To videos do you look-up?” While looking through the responses we found that most participants used “How-to” videos in searching for beauty tips or crafting and do-it-yourself. This may be because there was a majority of women who took the survey. The next most mentioned was for technology help. There was a large array of majors, it was a good mixture.
